Blurb:

Behind the music…

Being best friends with a mega-star has its perks and Nicole Wilde, music journalist, laps them up. But when said friend, Dylan King, gorgeous lead singer of The Burnouts, has zero sense of self-preservation – once a drop of alcohol hits his blood stream ‒ and an inability to keep ‘little Dylan’ in his pants, it also comes with responsibilities. Now, Nicole has to track down Dylan in time to play a charity gigtomorrow. Half a dozen groupies, a haunted hotel, a tattoo parlour, a reality show runner-up and a crazy bed-hopping, sleepless night later – will she find him before the tour bus leaves town? And when she does, is it time to head home? Or to jump on the tour bus and go along for the ride!

Review:

First of all a huge thank you to Portia and GG Book Tours for the chance to join this gorgeous tour. I have to begin by telling you all how much I love the cover of Portia's debut novel! It is really gorgeous and eye catching!

I have to admit I am still finding it hard to believe that this is Portia's debut novel. Her writing style flows beautifully, making it an easy read. I love the fast pace of the story as it makes it a real page turner and really emphasises the crazy adventure Nicole is on trying to find Dylan.

As the book is only 59 pages, it doesn't go in depth into the characters like you'd find in a full length novel. But Portia's writing is very real, so you instantly connect win the characters and learn about them throughout the crazy adventure - a real talent!

I love Nicole - she has a great zest for life, and adventure. I loved her energy and her ability to just take things as they come. I think everyone needs to be more like Nicole sometimes; life can get too serious. Plus there's some gorgeous guys which always add to the appeal of a story! ;)

I really enjoyed this book, and there was the perfect amount of humour which had me chuckling throughout the book. I am definitely looking forward to reading Portia's next book, How Not to be Starstruck, which is out in March 2014!

Between a Rockstar and a Hard Place is funny, adventurous and full of the weird and wonderful! A must-read!!

Author Interview:

Alongside today's review, I have the amazing honour of welcoming Portia MacIntosh to a Novel thought. Portia was so generous to take the time to answer some questions for me and I am excited to share them with you.

Hi Portia, it's great having you on at A Novel Thought for the final day of your book tour. It must be a really exciting time for you.

1. Had you always planned to write a book based on your experiences in the music industry?

It was never my intention to write books, it just sort of happened. It occurred to me one day that writing a novel might be a good way to tell my tour stories anonymously. As soon as I started doing it, that's when I realised I wanted to write books.

2. How did you become involved in that line of work?

Again, I just sort of fell into it. I got "in" with a pretty big band when I was a teenager, through them I met other bands, I made friends and I eventually ended up with a job in the biz.

3. You’ve mentioned before that you don’t feel like you’ve grown up because of the career you’ve had, is this still the case, or do you feel more grounded now?

I am an absolutely rubbish adult. I'm in my mid twenties, but in my head I'm still that 15-year-old. That's the beautiful thing about the rock 'n' roll lifestyle, it keeps you young on the inside but ages you terribly [laughs].

4. What was your best experience whilst writing your novel?

It was like free therapy for me [laughs]. Seriously though, it was nice being able to put years silliness to good use.

5. What was the hardest thing you had to face when writing?

Just finding the time. I was getting my best ideas at gigs and having to make notes on my phone and stuff like that. I wrote a lot of chapters on my phone.

6. Is your style of writing inspired by a particular favourite author?

Not really. I wanted it to sound like Nicole, my main character, was telling you the story herself, so it's in her voice.

7. Do you enjoy reading yourself? – if so, what is your favourite genre?

I love reading. I'm a massive chick-lit fan, but I read loads of different stuff.

8. How have you found working alongside bloggers for help with promoting your book?

The bloggers I have worked with have all been absolutely lovely! I love chatting with them and answering questions.

9. If your book was turned into a movie, who would your dream cast be for the main characters?

Oh, I love this question! That's a tough one. For Nicole, someone young, bubbly, blonde and capable of pulling off the rock chick look - like Jorgie Porter. For Dylan, I think Kit Harington would be perfect.

10. And finally, is there a particular message you want readers to get from your book?

I just want to give people a little glimpse into a very weird and wonderful lifestyle.

Thank you so much to Portia for spending some time at A Novel Thought today.

Make sure you check out Between a Rockstar and a Hard Place, and lookout for How Not to be Starstruck coming in March!
