Guest Post: Emma Reviews 'Geek Girl' by Holly Smale

Blurb:

Harriet Manners knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a “jiffy” lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. She knows that bats always turn left when exiting a cave and that peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite. But she doesn’t know why nobody at school seems to like her.

So when Harriet is spotted by a top model agent, she grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her best friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of impossibly handsome model Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.

Veering from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, Harriet begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.

As her old life starts to fall apart, will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

Review:

Geek Girl has been on my TBR list for quite some time now and I couldn’t wait to start reading it. Holly is a wonderful, heart warming person who is always up for a natter and on a daily basis, she inspires me.

I had no idea what the narrative contained as I bought the novel simply on recommendation and what the cover looked like. Little did I know it’s kind of a true story... I still have to quiz the author on it, but it’ll all make sense once YOU read it.

Harriet is absolutely fantastic and a very strong character. She’s a geek and I love that she knows everything about anything. It’s extremely clear that Holly did a lot of research whilst writing this novel. It’s fun of facts, friendship, family and fame.

I didn’t expect the narrative to turn out the way it did and I really hoped that Harriet wouldn’t lose who she truly was whilst being thrown head first into the modelling world. I really wanted her to stay as quirky Harriet and I’m really glad she did.

The second novel is yet to be bought but will be read, I promise!
